Remain Cautious at Tax Time

SUMMARY: With the income tax filing deadline looming, scammers are poised to take advantage of consumers. Check out these steps to help protect your finances and personal data.
Tax season is a prime time for fraudsters to exploit unsuspecting taxpayers. Scammers use identity theft, phishing schemes, and fake tax preparers to steal refunds or personal financial information. Here’s how you can protect yourself:
File early. The sooner you file your tax return, the less time fraudsters have to use your information for fraudulent filings.
Use secure filing methods. Use reputable e-filing services or mail your return directly from a post office. Avoid using public Wi-Fi when accessing tax documents online.
Watch for phishing scams. The IRS will never call, email, or text asking for personal information. Be cautious of unsolicited messages claiming to be from the IRS or tax agencies.
Protect your personal information. Shred sensitive documents, use strong passwords for tax-related accounts, and enable multi-factor authentication when possible.
Verify your tax preparer. Choose a trusted tax professional with a Preparer Tax Identification Number (PTIN). Avoid those who promise large refunds or charge fees based on refund amounts.
Monitor your tax records. Create an IRS online account to check your tax filings and monitor for suspicious activity. If you suspect fraud, report it to the IRS Identity Theft unit immediately.
By staying proactive and vigilant, you can reduce the risk of tax fraud and keep your financial information safe.
