A language barrier can seem like a huge divide for some, especially when it comes to trying to explain the intricacies of personal finance to a non-English speaking member.

It's exactly that challenge that invigorates Boston member service representative Mario Chamorro and makes his job as the branch's Spanish-speaking staff member all the more rewarding.

"In translating our materials and services, I often deal with members who may never have had a checking or savings account," the two-year Credit Union veteran says. "I help them grow accustomed to our products and build a relationship in the process. I may show them how to balance a check book or show them how to use an ATM."

Mario takes the responsibility very seriously for good reason. "I feel very passionate about this because I have to translate for my own parents, as well. They came to this country seeking the American Dream and personal finances are very important part of achieving that dream."

That sense of compassion and caring has made it possible for Mario to relate to customers on a personal as well as a business level. "I really do feel like I am their lifeline. I create this relationship with them, so that a year from now, when they're ready to buy a house or purchase a car, they're obviously going to call me."

"That's what I love about the Credit Union," he says. "We're not in this field simply to make a profit like a lot of our competitors. It just feels good to know that I'm coming to work for the good guys. I feel very proud to tell people where I work."
